Buffett's big bet: $34B on 2nd-largest railroad (AP)

AP - The biggest name in investing is making what he calls an "all-in wager" on the U.S. economy — $34 billion to own a railroad that hauls everything from corn to cars across the country. » Full Story on Yahoo! News

Wow! My stock skyrocketed with this deal.
Thanks Warren.

Warren Buffet is an embarrassment to America. He will run this stock and emplyees into the ground. Has Buffet and Goldman Sachs paid back the TARP money and taxpayers yet? Pay back USA 100%
Buffett. Let Buffet buy 10 percent of Union Pacific in Omaha, NE thats it. Burlington Northern-Santa Fe say no, absoulte no to Buffett greed.

This comment from investor below make sense what he is up to. Same game with Boone Pickens wind farm deal.

This is a bet on Cap and Trade legislation - he expects the railroads to be a prime beneficiary.

Done PROPERLY, an efficient rail distribution system FAR outweighs our current TRUCKING system, and has the side benefits of environment and less wear and tear on the interstate highway system.

And since our Constitution gives the Federal government authority over the Interstate commerce explicitly, I have no problem with that. Probably stuns a lot of you I know, but DONE RIGHT, train use would be a great thing. Just that the government has to be watched like a hawk to do things right.

It's the rest of the garbage in Cap and Trade that will kill the economy.

Agree on high speed Air, Rail, Ground, Marine Transports. Railroads and BNSF are good Industry and Company. Anti-trust issues come into play. Warren Buffet is Anti-Trust monoply financially and literally. No deal, no trust Buffett. Burlington Northern Santa Fe. Do not let greedy Buffet to take over BNSF railroad. Buffet pays back 100% of TARP first. Let him own 10% of Union Pacific in Omaha, NE perfect.

and so it goes , you see who is going to fleese america and were the ones that are going to foot the bill . our tax money for their bail out , then they invest on what their hoping to be bountiful returns ,
I've been trucking for over 30 yrs and they think the rail roads will replace the trucking industry . but I'd like to see a train dock a trailer in a warehouse door ! no matter what we'll still need the human element, no computer can make human decisions behind the wheel !
and for now they state they (trains) can haul freight cheaper than trucks . but how do they get it to destination !
then again were being sold out by our govt and big corp's

At least someone has the guts to still invest under this Obama regime. I hope Mr. Buffett Makes a bundle, and shows all the communist how its done. If I were he, I would be afraid the communist Obama would throw a few regulations at me to ruin my investment, and try to make me look like an evil capitalist, the way he does for all the other FREE MARKET companies that are not in bed with him. Go for it Warren.

This stupid reporter doesn't mention the most important reason for this acquisition.... gas is getting more and more expensive and will continue to get more expensive in future years.... the result?? More and more transportation by railway as opposed to trucking. Birkshire Hathaway is smart.

Buffett is one of the only true investors in this market that has any
guts, the rest of the so called investors, are like a bunch of brain
dead sheep, running scared all the time. If someone says BOO!,
its sell, sell, sell. If Buffett can make money off this deal, good for
him. A least he is not afraid to try.

I'm sure in the future travel by rail will certainly not be cheap if a few guys own the whole deal.

The return of the robber barons?

Warren Buffett for PRESIDENT! (I'm NOT kidding!)

This guy has been right about the economy since he started investing! YES, he's lost a lot of equity in the past couple of years, but he DOES know what he's doing (UNLIKE our current House, Senate and WH.) The only MAJOR hurdle is getting the "Progressive Liberals" out of the House & Senate. We need to get rid of BOTH the extreme right AND left! This is an ongoing issue for EVERY president. I support "term-limits"!!!!

Buffett drives himself to work in a $40,000 Lincoln, lives in a $250,000 house he bought 30 or 40 years ago, and flies COMMERCIAL.

Washington and Wallstreet should pay VERY CLOSE ATTENTION to his business model. (NOT that it will happen!)

Buffett's investments have created FAR more domestic jobs than any hardcore liberal or conservative will acknowledge.

"It's the ECONOMY STUPID!"

As someone who worked for a very viable company that Warren Buffet purchased and destroyed, this breaks my heart. He will do the same thing to this company that he did to ours, get rid of everyone who has worked there for any length of time and get cheaper employees. That railroad will be a shell of its former self in less than a year. Mark my words.

Hey Buffett, since you exploited the Bank stocks by virtue of tax payer bailouts, how about giving back all those proceeds to the taxpayers; better yet, how about Obama taking away those exploited proceeds from you and using them to rebuild many an American's suffering 401k?

Thanks CARLT...at least you understand. Have ANY of you realized that Buffett has started giving away 85% of his $44 billion fortune to CHARITY.
That is $37.4 billion!!!! All you guys who stick up for Limbaugh when others criticize him say: "look how much he gives to charity!!!" Well......????
This man started from EXTREMELY meager beginnings and built his fortune one dollar at a time through hard work and intelligence. I thought that was the American dream??? (ahem...you out there REPUBLICANS???) Yet everyone chastises him when he makes money. The man is a genius!!
Sorry folks, but Capitalism isn't ALWAYS the utopia it's made out to be. You don't get to that level by being a pansy.
I guarantee that Mr. Buffett does not like having to cut jobs and cut back wages.....but IT'S BUSINESS and that is the way it is. I can assure you he has created more jobs than he has cut!! It sounds like there is A LOT of jealousy on this board!!!

As a BNSF employee I'm not worried of less pay and a worse working environment. We are still contracted union labor. If he would like "Joe Crap the rag man" working on his fleet, he probably will not get the quality of locomotive that makes this company the number one Class A railroad that it is today...
