Moscow could have started WW3 over Berlin Wall: Gorbachev

MOSCOW (Reuters) – The Kremlin could have started World War Three in 1989 had it used troops to crush the demonstrations that preceded the fall of the Berlin Wall , former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev said on Tuesday. » Full Story on news.yahoo.com

Gorbachez was the real leader who ended the cold war. reagan was too busy trading weapons for hostages to iranian terrorists. here is an excerpt of one of reagan's famous speeches: "well...ahhh..well, i really don't remember....zzzzzz...zzzzzz..oh sorry, well, make my day, ahhh.zzzzzz....zzzzzzzzz, snore, snore. Military and cultural strength and revival through Ronald Reagan, and a blessing of restaint on the part of Gorbachev, gave the world a future of liberty and real hope. It's time to revisit those lessons learned.

Wish Gorbachev were their leader now, still. He was a good one, at least he was in power at that time to let things go the way they did.

I don't really remember a lot of "gloating" although I'm sure there was some. I remember it more as a celebration and a feeling that the world was growing closer together. Most of us honestly thought this was not just good for the USA, but good for Russia and the former USSR as well.

Gorby is right. The Clinton administration especially should have done all they could to make overtures to Russia, making sure that they remained active in global affairs and policy considerations. Granted, their economy was nearly bankrupt, but they and their interests should not have been ignored or brushed aside. Instead, the situation devolved to the point where they elected a former KGB agent, longing for the days of old glory and domination.

Thank God and thanks Gorby. I knew you were a God fearing man. Good job. Just think, had you done so, we probably wouldn't be here right now.

Putin and Obama - both are power hungry and just downright conniving.
One is a snake the other sells snake oil.
However Russia, China and the Middle East will take advantage of Ob's weakness - oratory is no replacement for real resolve.

If Republithugs didn't spend so much time bullying the world instead of talking to the world, people wouldn't be so quick to point the weapons. Whackadoodle politics of fear mongering gets no one anywhere.

Gorbachev is a wise man and a true world leader. He deserves a lot of respect, too bad he's not still in power. Germanys re-unification is of course two fold. 1. Family and friends are together again. People are free and the Country is one Germany again. 2. Enormous resources had to be poured in to the re-structuring projects. Those who work(ed) were and are faced with paying more than 50% income tax alone(married). Germanys once generous welfare system and national health insurance was and is nearly sucked dry. With the influx of east German, Russian, and muslim extremists into Germany, they are now and have been for some time, much worse off than we are (for now). There is two sides to a coin. . . .

Gorbachev promoted democracy. Regan destroyed democracy and gave control of our government to corporations. Thanks to Regan we are now slaves for very corrupt system that benefits a few rich people and huge corporations.

Well spoken, an opposite politician with a heart.

The nuclear loss would have been such, that neither side would have recovered !

Was there "locked and loaded" with the Berlin Brigade, USAREUR ! A young East German girl, put some flowers in the barrel of our M-60, gave me a kiss on the cheek. We knew it was over ! We would have never fired.
The Grenzpolizei, stared back.
Threw him a pack of Marlboros !
He waved back !

Hey Gorbachev STFU - you didnt start WW3 because the U.S. would have taken you out. I was serving in the military back then and at that time we actually had you in check did you happen to remember or say anything about that?
You would have also had to deal with those who wanted their FREEDOM

He is responsible for Russia's prosperity today, and some of US's misfortune now for making US feel arrogant and foolish.

Like it or not and going back to the Joe Stalin days, the only thing that averted WWIII was the resolve and backbone of all U.S. presidents from Truman all the way through Reagan. Reagan certainly played a role....but he was not the only one.
Ultimately regimes like the Soviet Union respect and respond to only one thing: strength, will and resolve. Talking is nice....and overtures might have great intentions...but people like all the Soviet dictators prior to Gorbachev had no real interest in talking nor negotiating...and Putin is cut out of that same cloth. Obama's decision to back off of the missile defense program and betray the Poles is a prime example...the Russians reacted coldly and arrogantly....they respect only strength and toughness. Being 'nice' gets you no where.

Gorbachev know that Russia did not have the money to fight on another front. Afghanistan was a huge drain on their economy. Just like it is one us today.

The Soviet Union was bankrupt in 1989 in every sense...no money, no will power, no system and no leadership. If Mickey Mouse, instead of Gorbachev, was the head of the Soviet Union, the results would have been the same. The system had been on the downward spiral for years. Gorbachev's involvement was purely incidental. He is a big blow hard interested only in selling books. No wonder they don't like him in Russia.

i miss the Soviet Union, and the cold war. id rather have all of that that this terrorist crap. SOON, very soon, the US Government will begin targeting US Citizens as Domestic Terrorists as the definition of terrorist has been left intentionally open for anyone to be labeled a terrorist for there own causes and gains.
