    The Declaration of Independence has made a comeback.

    Not that the founding statement of breaking from the Mother Country ever went out of fashion. However, dramatic readings of the 1,337-word document have returned, just like in the late 1700s.

    The History Channel website gives a detailed overview of how the declaration came to be written, first from Richard Henry Lee's resolution to cut ties to the British Crown, to Thomas Jefferson hunkering over his handmade portable desk, to the arguments over changes and cuts—among them, criticism over the "execrable commerce" of the slave trade.

    Incidentally, the National Archives in England just announced unearthing another original copy of the historical document. A researcher came across the find months ago, and by accident, but the Brits conveniently timed the news for the American holiday. As if they could hog all the attention.

    The U.S. government archives has electronic copies, for people who want to do their own readings from the almost-real thing. For those who prefer being read to, NPR continues its tradition—now going on 21 years—of airing a reading by its newscasters, accessible here.

The United States was founded on the principles of individual freedom, free markets, private property, and limited government. As the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution reflect, individuals have the natural and God-given right to live their lives any way they choose, so long as their conduct is peaceful. It is the duty of government to protect, not destroy, these inherent and inalienable rights.

American people said "No" to such anti-free-market government policies as income taxation, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, welfare, immigration controls, economic regulations, drug laws, gun control, public schooling, and foreign wars. Unfortunately, in the 20th century, our country has moved in an opposite direction. Operating through the IRS, DEA, ATF, INS, FDA, FTC , and a multitude of other bureaucracies, our government has waged immoral and destructive wars on our freedom, our property, and our well-being.

Well, it's about time our anointed president read the Declaration....what is he thinking???Gone on the Fourth of July holiday???The Morons keep marching on and on hurrah,,hurrah,,the moron keeps marching on and on hurrah, hurrah...(wonder if he can sing...he surely talks a lot...just in front of the cameras.Talk about a Preening,self-satisfied,frl-flicker...Race Cards are being played, it'll set this country back to the Civil war, and this time...it'll be Catastrophic.He's fiddling, Rome is Burning!!!

It sure would be nice if they would go back to teaching the Declaration of Independence and the constitution in public schools. I keep a pocket constitution with a copy of the Declaration of Independence in my house and car. When we have our picnic this afternoon instead of saying a prayer we will be reading the Declaration of Independence.

That is all we are going to be able do is read it. Everything else will be barred, we'll be slaves in our own country, no rights,no liberties, no freedoms. This is comong fast unless We stop it. So Impeach this goverment and We will have our own country back.

One of the greatest documents ever written. And for some reason the basis for this country is being eroded daily by the congess and this administration. If they don't like the constitution why do they hold the offices that they do? If you don't agree with it, I'm sure that there are other countries that would be more to your liking. Why change ours?

The Declaration of Independence is a great document of historical significance. However, far too many confuse its importance with that of the U.S. Constitution. The Constitution is the foundation of what is great about America, not the Declaration.

"We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America."

Everyone should read this and they would understand the incompetence that has been and is running our government today. It's time to take back the government OF the People, BY the People and FOR the People and not this Government of Government by Government and solely for Government. In 1776 the Redcoats were the British government, today the Redcoats are our own government and it is time they get the heck out!

i to have a copy of the declaration of independence and the constitution in my home. but then i'm considered a right wing extremest by this liberal american hating gov. this is what needs taught in our schools, not how gay people have the right to marry or other indoctrination of abhorrent behavior. i and my family cling to the constitution, our guns, our religion and our family. to bad more people(like obama and congress) don't read these documents and live by them.

The only way (short of violence) to get rid of these corrupt politicians (and it's not just Democrats, it's the majority of Republicans too!) is to bring pressure on those who vote them in. Hold THEM personally responsible for the consequences of their choices. While you can't know who EVERYONE voted for, there are enough who advertise themselves to make an impact. If they run a business... don't do business with them, don't WORK for them, and tell them why. Encourage like-minded friends to do the same. Make them pay for depriving you of your liberty. They are, after all, the ones who stole it!

Back in the day when education was education, not indoctrination I learned real American history, real Texas history and civics.
I learned about the Constitution and the Bill of Rights and because of that I am not fooled by the snake oil salesmenship of Barack Obama.
The liberal zombies are the produced of a failed education system and liberal teachers programed by the teachers unions.
It is up to enlightened parents to correctly instruct their children in our founding documents and the men who wrote them. point out to them the fraud and bastardized version of the Constitution the Democrats are using to destroy our lives, but the lives of all the generations that follow.

The British also thought it would be a short war..... After all we were just a bunch of colonial "farmers" who were uprising. Not like their highly discaplined trroops.
The Brits did not take into account how willing we were to die for our freedom. Just as the tyrants ever since did not take that into account. The blood of thousands of American Soldiers, Sailors, Marines and Airmen has been spilled in countries around the world so that we citizens of the United States of America could enjoy our freedom Don't ruin it.

My ancestor, Samuel E. Chase, signed it ( right under John Hancock ) I am proud to say. I believe that he would be happy today, knowing that our country made it thru 8 horrendous years, thanks to Bush & Chaney, and came out o.k. now that we have a new, intelligent & good human being in office. Hey Repub's........stop being so mean & cold, and give him A CHANCE ! ! !

Happy Independence Day to all Americans whether your ancestors were early colonists, First Nations people ( mine were both and both fought for American freedom in the Carolinas and Virginia) or whether you are 1st generation or naturalized citizens; whether you are democrat, republican or other; regardless of race or religion or lack of religion. For those of you who really care about America and for those of you who can show that action speaks louder than words (or blogs); see you in D.C. on Sept. 12, 2009.
